TBT: Doff Your Hat For Everybody That Danced To Songs By Awilo Longomba

We never knew who he was, where he came from and what he was singing about. But we danced to his songs like our lives depended on it. Some say he sang in French while others say it was native Congolese language but we never cared. The words “Awilo longomba…eyi eyi,” were more than enough to propel is into a streak of acrobatic dances that will make onlookers question our sanity.
I won’t be wrong to say that all the songs in his “Kafou Kafou” album in 2001 can be categorized as evergreen songs to every Nigerian that was old enough to dance to his tunes in those days. The rise of Fally Ipupa & co might make the newbies of nowadays feel they have heard the best of other continental songs but we know deep down in our minds, we know that their childish thought is a result of the fact that they were too young to witness our good old days. Swing to the beats once again my friends. lets remember our Awilo days.
