The rise of VHS and VCD players in the late 90’s created a platform for many Nigerian children to watch a good number of thrilling movie that will stick permanently in our minds. Those times were indeed good times, as we were initiated into the group of die-hard fans of the likes of Jackie Chan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Jet Li and many more.
These movies were the creme de la creme of the 90’s. They had the perfect combination of action, comedy, suspense and the right tone of romance that accompanied those days. They are:
1. Mr Bean: In simple terms, there will never be a movie like Mr Bean again. It was the national movie of those days. It was one of the first movie/TV series we ever watched. It comprised a ton load of hilarious moves by our legendary Rowan Atkinson. This movie literally established Rowan’s name in all continents on earth.
2. Commando: This movie was indeed a must watch for all children of the 90’s. It was one of the immortal movies that established Schwarzenegger’s name in our heart and mind. We literally dreamt of becoming a one-man army after watching this classic. Though Terminator should also be on this list, we will only highlight Commando, so as to make room for other legendary movies.
3. Rambo: This thrilling action movie stood tall as one of the greatest movies of the 90’s. We all are guilty of automatically christening the lead character, Sylvester Stallone, after this movie.
4. Drunken Master: Our legendary Jackie Chan featured in a good number of blockbuster movies, but the most popular one in the 90’s was Drunken master. This movie literally made Jackie Chan a synonym of the karate system of combat in our heart and minds.
5. Karashika: Though there are many international movies that have not been listed, lets take a drive back home to remember our legendary Karashika. This was one of the first thrilling Nollywood movies ever made. This movie literally made all children of the 90’s attach long nails and hair to demons or demonic entities.
