A Rivers State High Court has condemned three persons to death for their involvement in the gruesome murder of four undergraduates of the University of Port Harcourt, Choba. Chiadika Biringa, Lloyd Toku Mike, Tekena Elkanah and Ugonna Obuzo were lynched to death by villagers October 5 2012 after they were falsely accused of theft in Aluu, a community in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
The students were stripped naked, severely beaten and then burnt to death. Delivering judgement in the case on Monday, the trial Judge, Justice Letam Nyordee, convicted a police ex-sergeant, Lucky Orji, Ikechukwu Louis Amadi (aka Kapoon) and Chinasa David Ogbada.
Justice Nyordee also discharged and acquitted four accused persons for lack of evidence. 12 people, including a police sergeant have been facing trial since December 20, 2012 over the alleged murder of the students. However, five out of the 12 suspects, including a traditional ruler in Aluu Community have been discharged.
