Egyptian Goddess! Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing Speaks On Beyonce’s Coachella Costumes

Beyoncé impressed the world with Balmain costumes for her epic Coachella 2018 performances last night.
Balmain’s Creative Director, Olivier Rousteing described Queen Bey as a “perfectionist,” while he discussed dressing the American singer for her historical show and getting Jay-Z’s seal of approval.
Stylist Marni Senofonte had approached Rousteing after his Fall 2018 runway show for Balmain and explained creating something in a military style for Beyoncé’s upcoming Coachella performances, which is all about survivors.

“She (Beyonce) has such a distinct vision for fashion and for her music, I really learned a lot from this experience and from watching her work in those rehearsals,” Rousteing told Vogue.
“If I am being totally transparent, it is very, very rare in this kind of process to have so much communication with the artist and the ones closest to her on her team.”
He added that he was able to be in the room with Beyoncè and she would give him direct feedback about how the lighting should hit the clothes, and what the music had to emphasize about each look.

Rousting worked with Senofonte and the rest of Beyoncé’s team to create two custom Balmain stage wardrobes, one for each of her recent performances and next Saturday night. Rousteing also dressed the over 200 dancers on stage, as well as Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, who will reunite with Beyoncé for a Destiny’s Child throwback moment.
The fashion designer revealed that he spent sleepless nights and long days creating the costumes, which include an Egyptian-inspired gold-and-black cape as well as a collegiate-style embellished yellow hoodie with “BAE” written on the front.

He adds on getting the seal of approval, “Jay saw the Egyptian goddess cape and when B put it on, his eyes went wide and he was so excited, he said, ‘Oh, wow!’ That gave me a lot of satisfaction.”
Rousteing is a French fashion designer, who was appointed to the helm of Balmain in 2011 at the age of 24. He has collaborated with celebrities that includes Frank Ocean and Kim Kardashian-West, and brands Victoria’s Secret and the Paris Ballet.
