Jose Mourinho and his men are close to a new FA Cup record should they beat Chelsea on Saturday (May 20).
Arsenal have recorded the most number of FA Cup final wins in the history of the tournament with 13 titles while United follow with 12. A victory in their 20th final appearance at the Wembley Stadium will see them share the record with The Gunners. Here are the last 12 times that Manchester United have won the Cup tournament:
1908–09 vs Bristol City
Manchester United recorded their first FA Cup victory back in April 1909 against Bristol City with a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace, London. Scottish player, Sandy Turnbull scored the only goal.
1947–48 vs Blackpool
United returned to the FA Cup final after 39 years and they won the title for second after their 4-2 victory over Blackpool at the Wembley Stadium. Jack Rowley scored twice, while Stan Pearson and John Anderson netted one apiece for the champ. Eddie Shimwell and Stan Mortensen scored Blackpool’s goals.
1962–63 FA vs Leicester City
Ken Keyworth scored the consolation goal for Leicester as they lost 3–1 to United who lifted the trophy for the third time with a goal from Denis Law and two from David Herd.
1976–77 vs Liverpool
United’s 2-1 victory prevented Liverpool from winning an unprecedented treble after winning the league the European Cup. All three goals came in a five-minute at the Wembley Stadium with over 99,000 spectators in attendance.
1982–83 vs Brighton & Hove Albion
Manchester United effortlessly won their fifth FA Cup trophy with a 4-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion in the replay match, having drawn 2-2 five days earlier at Wembley. Brighton relegated from the First Division that season.
1984–85 vs Everton
Manchester United defeated holders Everton by a single goal scored in extra time by Norman Whiteside. Just like they prevented Liverpool from a treble in 1977, had Everton won the match at Wembley, they would have completed an unprecedented treble that season with the League and European Cup already in their possession.
1989–90 vs Crystal Palace
This was the season Sir Alex Ferguson won his first FA Cup final having arrived at the Old Trafford four years earlier. The match finished 3–3 after extra time, but United won 1–0 with a goal from Lee Martin in the replay on May 17, 1990.
1993–94 vs Chelsea
United went into the final as Premier League champions, having won the title by eight points over Blackburn Rovers. Chelsea were mauled 4-0 by United in the match, which was the 49th FA Cup final to be held since the Second World War. French footballer, Eric Cantona scored two penalties in less than seven minutes, while Hughes and McClair netted one each.
1995–96 vs Liverpool
United and Liverpool were the biggest rivals when lovers of English football argue who is best at the time. Cantona again handed Manchester United the trophy with his 85th minute strike in front of over 79,000 spectators at Wembley. Liverpool and United entered the game as the most attacking sides in English football, but only a goal was scored in the final. Manchester United also won the Premier League that season.
1998–99 vs Newcastle United
Goals from Teddy Sheringham and Paul Scholes gave Manchester United a 2–0 win to claim their 10th FA Cup title. United won the Champions League four days later to complete their treble, having won the domestic league.
2003–04 vs Millwall
2004 was the season Cristiano Ronaldo won his first and only FA Cup trophy. The Portuguese forward scored one while retired Dutch footballer, Van Nistelrooy who scored twice in the game was awarded Man of the Match award.
2015–16 vs Crystal Palace
Louis van Gaal led Manchester United to their 12th FA Cup win after over 10-year wait. Spanish midfielder, Mata and England’s Lingard scored one apiece for Manchester United, while Jason Puncheon scored the only goal for Palace.
Jose Mourinho will be aiming to win his first ever FA Cup final at Manchester, having won the EFL Cup, FA Community Shield and UEFA Europa League with United during his debut 2016/17 season with the club.
